February, March and early April
Requires a small double handed rod of say 12ft for the Forss and
a 14/15ft rod for the larger rivers to cope with a full sinking
line. In early February a 2-3 inch tube may be needed decreasing
in size to a waddington of 1 inch by mid April. If the weather is
colder than normal a larger fly is recommended and on warmer days
in early April when the fish are showing, a size 8 shrimp pattern
may just be the medicine needed.
There is no exact approach but when water levels are high, a larger
rod helps. When they fall away, a smaller rod covers the water with
greater delicacy. If it is warmer than usual, a smaller than average
fly might be more effective and a large spate in May might demand
a return to the lines and flies of February!
Mid April - May
You may fish with a full range of tactics at any time during these
months. An intermediate, sinking tip or even a floating line might
work best. Water levels and temperatures are variable, so be prepared.
June - August
Water levels generally fall as summer draws in and a grilse rod of
10/11 ft will cover most beats adequately. Bring the larger rod with
you as nothing is certain where the weather is concerned. Take the
small waddingtons and your flies down to size 12. This is normally
the time for a floating line and a "muddler" pattern or
similar wake-fly can be useful.
September - October
As for April and May a range of tackle would be the best idea unless
you have a crystal ball. As the season draws to a close there is a
return to sinking lines and larger flies.
