Fishing in Thurso and near Wick

The rivers and coastlines surrounding us offer fishermen and women some outstanding sport.

Salmon fishing and Forss House Hotel have always been indelibly linked and the river winds round the house and undoubtedly gives the hotel a large part of its character. The largest fish ever caught on the River was a cock fish of 42lbs landed on 14th August 1954 by David Couper just at the bottom of the garden.  “Like” us on Facebook for a weekly fishing report.

Forss House, the Perfect Fishing Hotel

Our whisky bar hosts an impressive carving of this fish and Anne’s lore accounts that when Ian took it down a few years ago for several months – no fish were caught on the river until it went back up….?  Needless to say it has not moved from the wall since!

The River Forss

The River Forss is a typical spate river which meanders around the hotel. It is one of the most attractive rivers in the Northern Highlands, offering a variety of challenges: from the productive Sea Pool to the stunning Falls Pool; and further upstream to the meandering marshlands of the upper beats.

Occasionally, rods become available for weekly rent in their owner’s absence.  For availability, please visit the Fishery’s web site or contact the Administration Manager, Victoria Ross on 01847 861 360, mobile 07719 690 110 or email Victoria admin@fishforss.co.uk

If you are interested in how the fishing is going on the Forss, please visit the hotel’s Facebook page, where Anne posts her regular weekly report on current catches and conditions.  We do hope you ‘like’ us!

From Loch More to the sea 20 miles away, Thurso offers good fishing over 13 varied two rod beats. Fish run from February to October and in a good season the river produces well over 1000 rod caught salmon, in fact the current 5 year average is running at 1800 fish a year.

Rods can be booked by the week or day, permits are available from the River Manager Eddie MacCarthy.

Strath Halladale lies only about a 10 minutes drive west of Forss. There are 4 beats, each fishing up to 3 rods. Around 400 fish are caught annually.

Rods can be booked by the week or day, permits are available from Audrey Imlach on 01641 571271.

Six 2 rod beats stretch the length of this lovely river offering good access and excellent sport. Beats are lengthy and each has a ghillie who will share his knowledge and add to your success.

Day permits are available from The Store, Bettyhill or phone 01641 521207.
